Katsurabaum (Cercidiphyllum japonicum)

The Japanese Collection

In a small, hidden and sheltered dell, Japanese tree species were planted out in 1971 from the FVA’s tree nursery. The seeds came to a large extent from Mr. Rupf, the former Head of Forestry in Baden-Württemberg after a voyage to Japan. The collection contains principally species from the genus Cryptomeria (Japanese ceder), Chamaecyparis (cypress) and Picea (spruce) as well as a few broadleaved trees like Cercidiphyllum japonicum (katsura tree) and Betula maximowicziana (monarch birch) (see map 10).
